From the first day we opened our apartment to the children of immigrants, we intended to grow Presencia into a community that was neighborhood-led, radically inclusive, and sustained through generations. For sixteen years, we have been gathering the team, shaping the programs, and nurturing the lives that would make that vision a reality.
This year, we took big steps toward each of our original goals. We invited Wanda, who started with us as a second grader and is now 25, to join our staff full-time. We introduced social-emotional curriculum for every age group. We met an occupational therapist who committed to working onsite with our neuro-divergent students. We clearly stated our commitment to welcome and affirm students with diverse sexualities and genders. We trained our staff to accommodate students with developmental differences.
In this delicate and thrilling moment, I believe that Presencia is ready to launch into new space in our work.
